Cannot add stations using M3U8 playlist format

Hi there, 
I have version 9.56.1-0+g2....... downloaded several weeks ago from the google play store.  A lot to love in this app...    but I cannot add ANY radio station station that streams using the .m3u8 playlist format...   According to the Release Note for v9.21.1-0+g2d03cd78a-950182843 this should work, but it does not.  What could be wrong?
Example of stations I tried to add are:
- Amman FM https://jrtv-live.ercdn.net/jrradio/ammanradiovideo.m3u8
- Radio Taiwan International (Western)
    https://streamak0138.akamaized.net/live0138lh-mbm9/_definst_/rti6/playlist.m3u8
